Summer is upon us and it’s ready, set, grill!

Grilling is one of the best ways to keep additional calories off your favourite cuts of meat.  No need for fatty sauces when you can lock in the juices by searing on the barbeque, then lowering the temperature for the remaining cooking time.  Also, the extra grease and fat filters out instead of being reabsorbed by the meat.

Buy lean cuts of steak, chicken, fish, lamb or pork.  Cut off any visible fat and remove the skin from poultry.  Tofu, tempeh and other meat substitutes can also be marinated just like your favourite meats.  Wine, flavoured vinegars and citrus based marinades work well with inferior cuts of meat because they work as tenderizers.  Spiced based rubs contain no fat at all!

And don’t forget about vegetables and fruit on the grill.  Weightwatchers.com recommends vegetables that are tender and cook quickly, like squash, onions, tomatoes, zucchini and peppers.  Just baste them with low-sodium bouillon for fat-free flavor.  Grilling fruit brings out its natural sweetness with no need for extra sugar.  Pineapple, peaches, plums, and pears are great when grilled.
