| Did you know that one in three adults in Alberta have difficulty using written materials in daily living? Did you know that one in two adult Albertans have difficulty using math skills in everyday living? Literacy is the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities at home, at work and in the community.
In Canada and around the world, new demands from society and working life are raising expectations, requiring all individuals to build on their existing competencies and abilities and to continue renewing their knowledge and skills throughout life.
An increase in a person’s literacy skills can result in changes in self-esteem, decision-making skills and economic situation. An improvement in literacy skills provides more options and opportunities.
P.A.L.S. – Project Adult Literacy Society is a community-based literacy program that works with adult students who are improving skills in reading, writing, speaking and math. Volunteers, from the community, work with students to meet goals and set directions for the programs.
International Adult Learners’ Week (March 24 – April 1, 2012) recognizes the importance of lifelong learning. It provides an opportunity to showcase adult learners and how they are improving skills at work, at home and in everyday life.
P.A.L.S. – Project Adult Literacy Society will be presenting ‘Students Share Experiences’ at Audreys Books on March 28, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Students will be presenting about their experiences as adult learners. Everyone is invited to attend and listen to these inspiring stories.
